Day 65 / Eureka, CA / 10 miles (Total 2385)
Since Crecent city, I have heard nothing but negative words about Eureka, CA. The sun hasn’t shined in days and the homeless make the city look sad, leaving me with thoughts of leaving soon. Yesterday, after Todd left. I was ready to get out of this depressing city. I received an E-mail from a person following the blog, Mike, telling me if I need a place to crash to swing by his work at Pacific Outfitters. I was in a hurry to check a KOA. out of town for a days rest, then I rode past the store Mike worked at. I never met Mike before, but he remember me from back in the day of 20” BMX riding. He’s been following the blog and offered some hospitality. We got to talking and by the end of my visit, he invites me to go ride some fat tire Surly bikes. I have always wanted to ride one, and to do it on the beach, perfect with me. I set up camp at a nice KOA outside of town, away from the riff-raff. Mike and Joel picked me up and we headed out for a nights ride on the beach and in the California sand dunes. So much fun!
The next day, I pedal a few miles back into Eureka. Mike is going out of his way to give the Mother Trucker a well deserved tune up. He brought his bike with, so I would have some transportation to get around today. Never talked to this young man before I came into Eureka and he has shown the best hospitality. I get back to the KOA on the borrowed bike and it’s time for some chores. A couple hours go by and Mike sends me a message that the bike is all tuned up. Pedal back to town and head to Pacific Outfitters. I roll in and I get Daja vu. Mike shakes his head and says, “where do I start?” The same look my good friend/mechanic gives me when I bring my car in. What can I say, I like to run things to the last thread, till nothings left. He went through all the work that went into the Mother Trucker and all I could do was laugh. Never ran brake pads down to the metal on a bike before. Mike put in a lot of time in, and Pacific Outfitters hooked me up with some bike parts. Mike was off work now and we head to Arcata, so I could check out the local Rampart indoor skatepark. We walk in the doors and like always I get butterflies seeing a new park. Helmet on and Mike grabbed me a bike. So fun to rip around a park after this long. Nothing crazy, just a good time being back at a skatepark.
At the end of the night, I thanked Mike once again. And to hear him tell me it was an honor to help out. That I inspired him back in the day riding BMX, and he wanted do give something back. That gave me some goosebumps. Thank you Mike for the great stay in Eureka, so glad I stuck around to see the good! Also, I want to give another thank you to Pacific Outfitters for all the bike parts. Not sure what I’m more excited about, the tune up, fat tire riding, or a quick session at Rampart. One friend went home that day and I found a new one in Eureka. Take care Mike.
